DESCRIPTION:Join us for this informative evening! \nPresenter: Richard Gevirtz\, Ph.D.  \nThe Benefits of Biofeedback and Heart Rate Variability \n—a technique that trains you to control your autonomic nervous system for a healthier heart. \n \n\nHealthy beat to beat heart rate shows a lot of variability due to constant adjustments made by the non-voluntary (autonomic ) nervous system\nMeasures of this variability have been shown to be markers of heart and general health\nA type of biofeedback that uses information from an EKG to help the client find an optimal breathing pattern has been shown to greatly improve variability and thereby reduce risk and improve stress related symptoms.\nDiscuss these concepts and show a demonstration of the measurement of heart rate variability and of the biofeedback technique.\n\nRSVP: 959-459-6919 \nPacific Pearl La Jolla\, 6919 La Jolla Blvd. La Jolla\, CA 92037 \n  \nDr. Richard Gevirtz is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Diego. He has been in involved in research and clinical work in applied psychophysiology and biofeedback for the last 30 years and was the president of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback\, 2006-2007. His primary research interests are in understanding the physiological and psychological mediators involved in disorders such as chronic muscle pain\, fibromyalgia\, and gastrointestinal pain. In this vein\, he has studied applications of heart rate variability biofeedback for anxiety\, pain\, gastrointestinal\, cardiac rehabilitation and other disorders.  He is the author of many journal articles and chapters on these topics. He also maintains a part time clinical practice treating patients with anxiety and stress related disorders.
